My boss Kim is obsessed with the Olympics. We were told early that the people at the pool would be celebrating, like it or not! Kim made Olympic rings and I sifted through my things for anything "USA". We ended up decorating the pool with rings, flags, medals, and torches. I even made us T-shirts!

On Friday morning we had our own little "opening ceremony". We played the Olympic Fanfare with Kim and I marching in carrying torches. We each had an escort with a flag marching behind us. Then we met at the other side of the pool, put our torches together, then went and placed them in their holders. The class in the pool was roaring with laughter and cheers. We then came together and shouted, "Let the Games Begin"! I know you must think we are so cheesy. Well, we are! That is what's so funny! We sure had fun and I think that morning will be remembered at the pool for a long time.

BBQ
Well I haven't written much lately but that is mainly due to the fact I haven't done much worth writing about! Ok, there have been a couple things. I had a BBQ last Sunday and it went so well. I invited everyone from work and also a few friends. It was a BBQ/Pot Luck and everyone brought tasty food ( tri-tip, corn, salads, ice cream). We all gathered around one table and chatted, laughed, and caught up with each other. One lifeguard is on duty at any given time so we don't get much chance to talk and hang out with each other. I thought, "why not throw a party?" So I did!

The group I work with is so great and I'm glad so many could come. Now who is throwing the next party, hmmmm?

Back at Home

Well I got home from PA a few days ago and it's back to work! It is nice to have no stress for a change. I had more Myofascial Release done on my neck right before I left and it is feeling much better. I am still a believer!!! As I have said, I am staying with a penpal/Internet friend (Lindsey). We met up at the airport and everthing is fine and dandy. However, the trip hasn't gone exactly according to plan. Her oldest brother Mike decided to get married to Gaby who is from Brazil THIS Saturday! Since it was a sudden decision we have been rushing around doing last minute wedding shopping. There are 11 of us snuggled in this cozy house!

I'm glad that everything went ok and I get on with Lindsey, her family, and her soon-to-be family! We went to a drive-in last night and it's the first one I have ever been to. If we had that near my town I'd probably go there all the time. It's $5 per person and you get to see two movies (or parts of several...just change the radio station and watch another screen!).

This state is a lot greener than California and more spread out. The wedding will be in Reading, which is on the other side of the state near Philadelphia. It's a mad rush getting everything ready, but it's been a unique experience!

Why? Why?? WHY???!!!
I just couldn't believe it was happening to me AGAIN!! On Weds. afternoon I was in ANOTHER car accident! I was in Stockton going down Pershing Ave. minding my own business. I stopped at a stoplight and let's just say the guy behind me didn't. Normally I can remain calm and deal with the situation at hand. Well, after all I've been though, (an accident last month totaling my car and just buying a new one two weeks ago) I lost it. Now I have to go through the whole process again. How unlucky can I be? Luckily, my car isn't in too bad of shape. I mainly need a new bumper. (Yay Saturn!) However, the other guy's car is in pretty bad shape.

At least he has insurance this time and I had upgraded to full coverage. We were both ok in the accident except my neck is aggrivated again, just after I was getting better and moving on with my life.

All I can say is you have to drive defensively (you gotta see 'em and you gotta dodge 'em). It's just scary to think that sometimes there is nothing you can do to avoid it.

My Summer Trip
Okay, it's high time I post! To be honest, not too much has happened worth writing about. I continue to work each day and volunteer at the museum on Tues/Thurs. My self-guided tour packets are coming along! Besides that, my calendar is empty. It's a bit sad really...

Anyway, that will change temporarily when I go on my summer trip! This time I will venture to Pennsylvania (and Ohio) to finally meet an Internet friend from PA I've been corresponding with since 1997. We used to go to the same chat room and then we sent letters and talked on the phone. She is a lot like me it's almost scary!

So yeah, on Saturday I will be flying into Cleveland for a nice 11 day trip. It will be so nice to get out of Lodi for a while!! Then I can come home with lots of pictures to post on the updated website I'm working on.

I'm so glad to be past the horrible month of June and finally have my life back on track. I swerved, but still hit her, smashed into the side of her car, went through some bushes, and landed in the parking lot.

Her car was totally smashed in on the side and she had three small children in the back. Miraculously, everyone was ok and the police/amulance arrived within a minute. Her car is totaled and mine is near totaled. Just after the cars were towed off my neck started to ache. I then spent 4 hours in the ER getting X-Rays (twice) and waiting for the results.

At least I am not at fault because she clearly pulled out in front of me. I would be more careful pulling out, especially with three small kids in the car!

You gotta see 'em, and you gotta dodge 'em!

I am ok, I just have spasming in my neck, I can't work, have no car, and have stayed mostly in bed for six days now.

Shit happens.

Angels and Demons, by Dan Brown

After hearing about the Dan Brown books my fellow classmates (and a handful of other people as well!), I decided to go and buy his books for summer reading. I have already finished Angels and Demons and I am quick to say I really enjoyed it. The book was very thought provoking about the ethics of science vs. religion. I like how he blended fact into a fictional story. The art-related tidbits are an added bonus. Well written! Now I am proceeding directly into The Da Vinci Code. So many small items and inside jokes are sprinkled throughout the film. The story picks up where it left off, with Shrek and Fiona on their honeymoon. They soon go off to "Far Far Away Land" (which is actually called Far Far Away Land), and hilarity ensues. It is generally agreed that Antonio Banderas as Puss 'n Boots steals the show. They did a great job on him!

A few jokes and references to other movies are thrown in for adults, including a spoof on O.J. Simpson, Cops (make that "Knights"), and Joan Rivers on E!. Product placement is also prominent around the town including Old Navy and Starbucks, with another one across the street! The packed theater was laughing hard at times.

I would recommend seeing Shrek 2 if you get the chance. Sequals can be questionable, but I thought it was just as good if not better than the original. Also, keep your eyes peeled for small details. It is very easy to miss something, includint the extra scene at the end during the credits. Stick around for a minute. The bonus scene is worth it!

Shrek 2 on imdb.com

Summer Reading

I have just spent a bunch of money on books for my summer reading. I received the information about this in email a few days ago. It is not the first time I have seen something like this. Everyone is supposed to NOT buy gas for a whole day. In theory, it would cause a crash and lower gas prices.

This is ridiculous and makes no economic sense. The world economy is booming and it's all about supply and demand, plus inflation. Everyone will just fill up on Tuesday or Thursday and go on as normal. People will still purchase the same amount of gas and the price is unaffected.

Gas is a commodity and we have no choice but to buy as much as we need to get us around. If the idea was to carpool or ride the bus or a bike to use less gas that could mean something, but the overall amount of gas purchased will not change by not purchasing it on a certain day. In fact, people were purposely running down their double tank trucks and SUVs so they could proudly fill them up today, even with a person protesting at the station!

Oh well, it'll soon be Thursday, and life will go on.

P.S. Now, Ted C. Van Alen Jr. has been studying why young people are leaving the town. As a person from the age group and a Lodi Native, I have listened to many people telling of their plans to move away at a certain time (to go to college or upon graduation from Delta are the most common times).

It is true. There is not much in Lodi for a young person to do. There's the movie theater, but how many movies can one see? The other common activity is going out to eat. If I am meeting with someone for a sit down meal I will likely choose a place in Stockton. There are a few bars, but not everyone drinks. People I know meet at Starbucks. It's the only inviting place where you can hang out.

When it comes to careers, I'd have to agree with Van Alen. Lodi isn't bursting with many business prospects for the new college graduate. It does depend on the field, but some people crave a fresh start.

I think people who grow up in Lodi want to experience something different. They go to a bigger city, or even another state. I can see myself moving to Sacramento for a while. If I can find a job, that is! Meanwhile, the parents are hoping their kids will never leave town.

Don't get me wrong. Lodi is a nice town and a good place to raise kids. I just don't see myself spending my whole life here.

*This issue and Van Alen's research will be discussed at tonight's Lodi City Council meeting. It is open to the public!

New Blogger Site
Wow, I logged on to do my blog this morning and notices that Blogger.com has updated their site! A mother (who is a stripper) gets high on cocaine, Xanax, beer, and marijuana and drives home with a friend helping her get into the car. Her baby is also in the back seat. First of all, what kind of person lets a friend drive home when she is obviously under the influence? Wait, it gets better!

The woman is found on the side of the road unconscious. A Deputy Sherriff talked with her and found out she had warrents for failure to appear and license violations. He told her to go home and turn herself in the following day. (Hello, she is wanted for failure to appear! What makes him think she's going to show up?!) The by-standers dropped their jaws when he let her drive away. This deputy is also in the wrong.

She then went to a methadone clinic for a dosage and drives on. Of course, the mother can't control her car and she crashes it. After all that trauma she leaves the scene to go home and passes out. That's bad enough, but what about the baby? Well, this happened in Florida and the temperature is hot. The baby was left in the car and cooked to death. Now the mother is being charged with aggravated manslauter.

Several things are wrong in this story. The friend and the sheriff both stood by and let this happen. The mother obviously doesn't care about her baby and sefishly pursued her own interests. The charge of aggravated manslauter is also too lenient. This is murder! I know what people will say, "oh, the system failed her. She has suffered enough with the trauma of losing her baby." No, she has demonstrated a lack of responsibility and should pay the price.

Also, when people get away with this, there is no deterrent for other parents to not leave their kids in the car. Hardly any punishment is given when this happens.

Step up society! It should be common sense that you can NOT, under any circumstances, leave young children alone in a car. It happens all too often and now that the warm weather kicks in there will be several reports over the summer with kids dying from a lack of responsibility.

10 Tips for better emails, MSN.com

Writing skills are very important, especially in the business world. A professional tone, relevant subject line, and to-the-point composition works best.

I have also found that including a few questions into an email (personal or business) encourages a response. The parents insist that their children love it and it gives them confidence.

What's wrong with this picture?

Well, it teaches kids that the most important thing is beauty. They parade around in their adult outfits, make-up, and high heels to impress the judges. If they fail by not winning, the child feels she let her parents down. As for the children claiming they love it, how can a 3-year old know what he or she likes? Pageants will be all they ever know and they won't have a chance to be kids. When everyone says, "oh, she's cute" or "how adorable you are!" that is what the child will rely on. This was mentioned in my Intercultural Communication class. If a girl is not so cute, people find something else to compliment, such as "you're such a good athlete". Then the child will focus on that.

The outfits are disturbing as well. A 5-year old doesn't need to look like a 20-year old. I first thought about it when little girls wanted to dress like Britney spears with the short skirts and bare midriff. Kids are growing up so fast!

Part of it may be the parents living out their dreams though their kids. If a child wins several pageants it brings on bragging rights. If a girl wants to quit pageants, she may be reluctant to tell her parents because she doesn't want to let them down.

A new reality show Showbiz Moms and Dads is airing this month on Bravo. Parents are pushing for their children to succeed in pageants and acting. Watch it and decide for yourself.

How Much is Revealed?

I have noticed over the past few years the difference in journalism according to region. The main comparison is the Lodi News-Sentinel and the Stockton Record. A story in the Lodi paper may be descriptive, yet conservative when it comes to giving out names (This especially applies to minors). Yet, when reading the Stockton paper, all the names and ages are disclosed. Sometimes this includes a picture!

Why is that? Is it because news travels fast in a smaller town? As a Lodi resident I can say it sure does! This just illustrates a trend in journalism. I thought, "This is commercialized at its best!"

Reno mother's lawsuit targets alcohol providers, rgj.com, April 26, 2004

A 19 year old Reno man died in a drunk driving accident after getting drunk and driving his girlfriend's car home when he didn't have a valid license. Now his mother is suing Coors brewing Co. because that was her son's favorite beer. She says the company promotes underage drinking.

This mother is grieving for her loss. Yes, it is very sad and unfortunate to lose your son this way. However, Coors is not responsible for his choice to drink and drive. Making bad decisions has consequences and he paid the ultimate price.

The mother knew her son's favorite beer was Coors and that he was drinking under age. Why didn't she handle the problem and not allow him to drink until 21? Also, the mother is suing the girlfriend's mom who let her have the car. I find it interesting how that mother is being held responsible but she's not! Both people were at that party making the same choices.

As for the youthful people in Coors ads, of course they are going to show youthful people having a good time. They want to sell the product. Everyone is aware what the drinking age is.

This once again illustrates the sue happy society. Where do you end? Do you sue the car company for not manufacturing a car that would withstand his crash at 90 mph? Do you sue the city for putting up a pole that 'got in the way' of the car? She has to find someone to blame.

She'll probably win too....

Woman Sues Coors Over Son's Death In Accident, local6.com, April 17, 2004

Working Too Hard

In American society we are very busy people. It seems like everyone has a hectic schedule and is under a lot of stress. Students who work are no exception. I took on way too much last week, and with all the assignments, exams, and lack of sleep, it became too much. My body forced me to slow down.

Many people show up to work sick, which costs employers due to less productivity and spreading the sickness to others. I find myself thinking, "oh, I can't miss that test", "this is a very important meeting", or "no one else can cover the shift", but sometimes you have to put health first. When something serious or devistating happens (not just with health), it's amazing how priorities are quickly shifted.

If you push too hard your body will let you know. In our busy lives, be sure to slow down every once in a while and take some time to relax.

High gas prices here to stay, experts say, Lodi News-Sentinel, April 17, 2004

Don't count on the price going down when you look at that gas station sign! The prices won't be going down any time soon. With summer approaching and an increase in road trips, the prices are expected to rise. The $3 per gallon rumor isn't true according to industry experts. Let's hope so! Still, the $2+ per gallon is hitting people hard.

According to HowStuffWorks, the price of gas is distributed between crude oil, refining costs, distribution and marketing, taxes, and station markup.
Americans are using a higher amount of gas (large SUVs, driving more), which creates a higher demand. Also, California has high environmental standards than the federal laws.

If gas prices remain high, Americans will eventually adjust and the cost will become accepted. Some changes would come in the form of higher delivery charges, a financial crunch on commuters, and an overall higher cost of living. That's how it works in Europe. People don't complain about the high prices (mostly tax) because it is the norm. I doubt people will drive less due to high prices. Americans love their cars. Driving is a both a luxury and a necessity, and at times like this it doesn't come cheap! All I can say is to budget some extra cash for gas if you plan on driving much this summer.

Fuel Economy --Check out gas prices and mileage tips.

AAA: Average Gasoline Price Hits New Record at $1.783

Diet Advice from McDonalds?, MSN.com, April 15, 2004

Here's a follow-up to the McDonald's story. In addition to getting rid of super size, an anti-obesity campaign featuring adult happy meals and fruit options has been launched.

An adult "Go Active" meal includes salad, bottled water, and a pedometer. Also, kids can get apple sauce or fruit instead of french fries. Like many restaurants McDonald's is jumping on the health food bandwagon. After fighting off lawsuits, they want to create a healthier image in an age of dieting.

I don't know about you, but if I go to McDonald's I am not craving health food. If I wanted a salad I would go to a restaurant or have one at home. The low fat versions of fast food items don't taste the same and I am glad that they are keeping the normal menu as well.

What about the health advice? A fast food restaurant is an unlikely source, and they are clearly doing this for better public relations. The main recommendation given is to walk more. Yes, we do need to walk more. I can't argue with that. I just don't like to think how much I'm going to have to walk to work off my meal at McDonald's! I can see their health campaign being a turn-off for those who do not want to change their habits.

McDonald's will always be fast food. It is nice for a treat or occasional quick meal on a busy day. Moderation is key!
McDonald's Unveils Bold Balanced Lifestyles Platform

Family Fights For Giant Jungle Gym, local6.com, March 17, 2004

A kid in Missouri has a $7,000, 22-foot tall jungle gym built by his father. Looking at the picture, this jungle gym is huge with a giant slide. According to city code, the structure is too tall by seven feet. The father did not check and get permission from the city before building it.

The kid (which looks to be about 4) does not need a giant jungle gym like that in his back yard. He hurt himself from a high fall. It's also an eyesore because it towers above the fence. The neighbors do not like it and signed a petition.

The parents have chosen to fight the law instead of comply, saying they would move before tearing the structure down. This is a similar situation to the blue mohawk. The parents have chosen to question authority instead of explain to their son that rules are to be followed even if it means not getting what you want. Like the mohawk, the gym is affecting other people.

Once it is torn down, they will move (and probably build another one in a new neighborhood!). Gray Davis has decided to go into acting! He has an agent and is starting off by doing a string of Yahoo! commercials. I find it amusing that the actor becomes governor, and the governor decides to become an actor! Davis even appeared with Gov. Schwarzenegger on the Tonight Show in March.

This just shows that a person can do several things. It's nice to know you can, but sometimes people should just stick to what they know. Actors become singers. Singers become actors....with some horrible flops as a result!

Who knows, Davis may do ok as an actor. While TV is turned to most, the newspaper is still considered an important source of news. With newspapers, teens seem to browse through and read the parts which interest or pertain to them. Many adults have the same approach.

In class we have a debate whether the newspaper will still be around in 20 years. It should still be around in some form. While teens aren't known for reading the paper, certain features have a strong following. The main items teens go for in the paper are entertainment and sports. It is figured that as teens grow into adults they will wander over to the critical stories and editorials.

There is hope for the future!

Joe, 7, bids £¾m for Power Ranger on ebay, thesun.co.uk, April 9, 2004

Here's a story that is just amusing. A seven year old boy in the UK bid £750,000 (about $1,350,000) for a Power Rangers toy and won (obviosly!). His mom was worried she would have to mortgage off her house to pay for the toy. Luckily, the seller was understanding and they did not have to pay. Lets just hope his mum learned a lesson about supervising kids on the Internet!

I miss these type of stories. UK journalism differs from American with the odd stories and gossip they publish. The local newspapers here are more comprehensive and it is nice to know what is going on locally. Yet, it is nice reading national news (from a much smaller nation) and amusing stories such as this one. That must be one great toy!

Child's Mohawk Causes Debate, CNN.com, April 5, 2004

A six year old boy was allowed to sport a blue mohawk by his parents as a reward for good grades. This did not go over well at school. The style is not allowed at school and the teacher made the boy wash out the color and his parents disagree with the actions. They say he needs to express his individuality.

I may be in the minority here, but aren't the parents going about this the wrong way? The school rules are in place, and should be respected. Instead, the parents are choosing to challenge authority. What lesson is he learning? A child needs to know that there are rules and consequences for breaking the rules. Instead, the parents have chosen to fight.

The blue mohawk is outside the norm and distracting to the other students. A six year old should not be concerned with expressing his individuality. If he does, it should be by his good grades or sports. The mohawk will cause people to stare at the boy, also causing social reprocussions. That is his choice, but the distraction affects others.

Translate this into the workplace. If an employee does not follow the dress code there are consequences. A society must have rules and boundaries. These parents are preparing him to be an adult. There is a time and a place for everything. The boy can have the hairstyle in the summer or on the weekends, but not at school. Rules are rules and he needs to follow them.

Work Ethic

I am happy to know what goes around comes around. First to $7.25 and up again to $7.75! This makes me upset. Back in October I saw some people passing around a petition for this at Delta College. I refused to sign it. I work my way up above minimum wage through loyalty to the city and now that raise is not worth as much.

People feel that the minimum wage rate is unfair. The wage cannot support a family (it is not really meant to). Well why not raise it to $10 an hour? Is that fair? Or how about $20? That is even more fair! It will just cause inflation. Soon after a minimum wage hike, we start to notice an increase in prices. What's the point? We are just making this state even more expensive to live in than it already is. California's budget is already bad enough. Now prices will have to increase to pay the employees. People owning small businesses will have to lay people off. We can also expect more cuts in programs.

The second reason people want a higher minimum wage is due to the unions. This state is very unionized. They promise have employees working for say, four times the minimum wage. If minimum wage goes up $1, they get a $4 raise.

This state has gotten so expensive already. If I stay here I will expect to be paying higher prices in the future. That's why I value my education.

FACNET Controversy, Modbee.com

Toddlers eat 'horrifying' diet, BBCNews, March 31, 2004

Children eat too much junk food! This article is from the BBC, which means the problem is in Britain too. Yet, America is the king of junk and large portions! 92% of toddlers are allowed to eat junk. What is to blame? Why, television of course! Those ads, they are just too corruptive and make the kids want to eat fast food.

I don't think so!

Sure, marketing to kids does have some effect, but it all comes down to the parents. Parents feed their kids junk for a few reasons. First, it is easier to serve processed foods than cook during our busy lives. Throw some chicken nuggets or Kraft Macaroni and Cheese into the microwave and food can be on the table in mere minutes.

Second, parents give in to their kids not eating so they don't throw a tantrum. One of my cousin's friends is 10 and he only eats chicken nuggets and french fries. Nothing else. I am not exaggerating. He won't eat anything and he is very small for his age because he doesn't receive essential nutrients.

Also, Americans as a whole are poor eaters. If parents have a poor diet, how do the kids stand a chance? Kids eat what their parents eat, which is junk as well! Yes, this is not the case for everyone, but the 92% in the study stands for something. These are toddlers! They don't know any better and will generally eat what they are fed. Once they get used to french fries it is harder to go back. It's like feeding a dog. A dog can build a taste for table scraps but if you do not allow it he can be content with the dog food he is given.

We give our kids a happy meal and put them in front of the TV. How much worse can it get? Less physical activity and junk food. This nation had better do something about it or the situation will continue to get worse. (From 92% to 100% perhaps?)

Principal sued over toy gun incident, PalmBeachPost.com, March 24, 2004.

In Palm Beach Florida a rumor that a 13 year old boy had a gun at school was started by his girlfriend. When the school police force found out about it, they brought the boy into the principal's office. The principal took out a toy gun (a plastic starter pistol) and held it to the boys head. He threatened the boy saying he would "squash him like a bug" and demanded that he produce the gun. As it turns out, there was no gun and the boy had no history of violence.

His mom is filing a lawsuit against the school board. (See my previous entry, "Sue-Happy Society") She says the boy is distressed after the incident. The principal was suspended for 10 days.

Has the principal gone too far? The zero tolerance laws in this country have been very strict, especially since Columbine. Nothing resembling a gun is acceptable on campus. Criteria for what is considered a gun has gotten ridiculous (that's another entry!). It is understandable to protect the safety of kids but holding a gun to the boy's head crossed the line. The kid was being cooperative so there was no need to threaten him in such a way. What does this teach kids about authority figures they should be able to trust? Plus, it's a bit hypocritical for the principal to have a gun at school (let alone threaten to use it) while they are enforcing the rule on kids. Also, since the campus has a police force I do not understand why they didn't handle it themselves.

It's a tough call on this one. If a kid is released after saying he had no gun and there was a shooting, the school security would be held responsible. I can see a school needs to keep things safe, but this principal let his temper get the best of him. He is not someone I would want at my school!

P.S. The boy should dump his girlfriend.

Dieters flock online to take weight off, CNN.com, March 22, 2004

The Internet has multiple uses. The state is proposing to raise the legal age to buy tobacco from 18 to 21. The reasoning behind this is to prevent younger smokers from starting. Newsflash: if teens want to smoke, they will! The same goes for drinking. Kids under 18 have their sources. (friends, parents, dealers, and the Internet, to name a few) Teens will just have to spend a few more years getting cigarettes from other people. Plus, if this law is put in place the current 18-20 year old smokers buying cigarettes legally will suddenly be out of luck?

The government realizes that teen smoking is a problem. Instead of combatting that problem directly they have decided to take the easy way out.
Smoking Laws
Message to teenagers about smoking cigarettes
Youth Smoking Prevention

Most Irritating Phrases, guardian.co.uk, March 24, 2004

The Guardian, one of the main newspapers in Britain, has compiled a list of the most irritating phrases. "At the end of the day" was voted to be the worst, followed by "at this moment in time". "Like" is third. I have found myself guilty of using some of these. I used to say "like" all the time, mainly in high school. I remember talking to my friend on the phone about it back then and we tried to continue the conversation without saying "like". It was very difficult! I am happy to say I have since decreased its use.

Some phrases not mentioned in the article are "you know", "actually", and "basically". I get caught using these sometimes as well. Most of the word usage comes from a lack of vocabulary or a loss for words. Sprinkling these phrases in can cause a distraction from the actual message. For example, by saying, "to be honest with you" the listener may wonder if that means you are not always honest with them!

As a member of Toastmasters, I am familiar with making word use choices. Toastmasters is an International speaking organization focused on helping people become better speakers no matter what level or reason. One job assigned at the meeting is the "Ah Counter". As we speak, we tend to use an assortment of crutch words. What is a "crutch word"? Here are the main ones: um, and um, so, mmm, and so, and, er, but, you know. These are tiny phrases thrown in as filler while thinking about the next thing to say. At meetings we have been trained to point these out and in effect, most people improve dramatically when thinking on their feet.

Eliminating crutch words and cliche phrases will help your speech and writing. Then "at the end of the day" you will communicate more effectively, "to be honest with you"!

"Is Friendster the 'Next big Thing'?", MSN.com, March 25, 2004

Friendster is the new face of social networking. If there is a way to make money for any form of discomfort, then sue! Currently at work (I lifeguard at an indoor pool) we have had many people slipping on the pool deck. Sometimes it is because a kid is running but most of the time it is just the slick surface. A kid slipped a couple months ago and said he was fine. Now his mother has come back saying he was not fine and wants the City to pay for his doctor bills.

As a result, we have to fill out an incident report for every slip, no matter how minor. Most of the time the people are just embarrassed after everyone sees them fall with a loud thud. Now they have to sit while a form is filled out with specific information. Sure enough, soon after I had been told this new rule a woman slipped. After a minor incident I explain the reason why we have to do the paperwork. Thanks to all the greedy people. It is because of you that we live in a society of paperwork, waivers, and witnesses.

FCC To Broadcasters: F-Word Out Of Bounds, Local6.com, March 19, 2004

The FCC has made it clear: Absolutely NO F-word allowed! After an incident with U2's Bono uttering the word at the Golden Globes, the FCC has been cracking down. Indecent words and acts on television seems to be a familiar topic to all lately. (i.e. Janet Jackson's boob!) I will never forget the look on my 9-year old cousin's face when he saw Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson's antics at the Super Bowl. It got me reconsidering what is still "safe" for kids to watch. Now more delay systems are being put in place. I wonder why they didn't do this earlier? People can be unpredictable, especially famous ones!

There is a 6am to 10pm threshold for broadcast TV but you still don't hear the most vulgar words. The European threshold is 9pm and after that it is amazing what is being said, done, and shown on TV. Let me tell you, it takes some getting used to! I think the United States is still more conservative and I don't think vulgarity on TV will catch up to Europe for a while.

The companies risk huge fines (could be up to $500,000) for indecency. I am glad the FCC is doing something about it. It's just a little unfair for a network to pay a huge fine because a rock star or singer does something indecent. Who is really to blame?

The Odds, www.funny2.com

As we plod along day to day, we live in risk. Sometimes we worry about bizarre things happening to us. To many it is only a passing thought. This site outlines some common (and not so common) occurances and the odds that they will happen. What things should we be worrying about and what should we forget about? Here are some highlights:

Odds of being struck by lightning: 576,000 to 1
This is probably the most popular odds mentioned in conversation. It is still very unlikely, especially if you stay in your car!

Odds of being murdered: 18,000 to 1
We have a better chance of being murdered, but still not a terrifying chance. Of course, it may be terrifying if you increase your chances by walking down dark alleyways, get in with the wrong crowd, or are stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time!

Odds of getting away with murder: 2 to 1
This is a bit scary. That means half the people that murder get away with it. What more can we do to to decrease these odds?

Odds that a first marriage will survive without separation or divorce for 15 years: 1.3 to 1
This statistic was a bit confusing. I thought the divorce rate was 50%. Yet again, that probably counts all marriages, including the multiple marriages of one person. This is a little reassuring that marriage can work!

Odds of winning the California lottery: 13,000,000 to 1
Don't bet on it. Save your money.

Chance of dying from a car accident: 1 in 18,585
About the same chance as being murdered.

Chance of dying in an airplane accident: 1 in 354,319
Air travel is probably the safest form of travel. Consider how many flights depart per day and the amount of accidents we hear about. It's not worth worrying about.

Chance of having a stroke: 1 in 6
Now to the health concerns. As we get older the chances of illness increase. Take care of yourself now and keep an eye on those symptoms!

Chance of dying from heart disease: 1 in 3
Yikes! This is not good. Keep in mind the American diet with big portions and fatty foods. We may have to pay for it later!

Chance of getting arthritis: 1 in 7
This seems about right. It's very much a possibility the joints may get a little stiff in old age. Once again, take care of yourself now to prevent this.

It's amazing how we worry about or set our hopes high for things that most likely won't happen. Just something to think about!

The Modesto Bee Online - Modbee.com

On Thursday night, my journalism web production class took a tour of the Modesto Bee. Eric Johnston is the director of online services for Modbee.com. He was nice enough to offer his time to talk to us and show us around. We had a discussion about the newspaper and the future of online journalism. Then he gave us a tour of the building. Everyone was amazed that the entire online site is set up and maintained by only seven people! The tour was very enlightening and I'm sure we all enjoyed it.

Jean, Kei, Joe, and I were all riding together. The night was still young so we went to downtown Modesto to get some food. I am surprised how much the area reminds me of Downtown Lodi. I think it is better. This could simply be because it is not Lodi!

I like our small class. We have a good group! A person does not have to go out and search for single people. On sites such as Match.com we can look for love with the click of a button. Last night after our class Modesto Bee tour, we got talking about our likes and dislikes. It sounded like we were spouting off our own personals!

While we're at it, I'm a 21/F. I've got one year left at CSU Stanislaus doing Communications and art history. I lifeguard at an indoor pool and teach some conditioning classes as well. I love to travel, and England is very dear to me.

Hmm, I don't think I'm very good at this. I've written "all about me" several times before, but never in a personals format! Some of the personals are so cheesy. I feel like I'm selling myself...and I guess in a personal, you are! It is very strange to think of it that way.

I have had the experience of meeting someone over the Internet and it worked for years. However, I don't think I will every seriously search for people through personals. This may sound hypocritical, but I did not meet though a personal site. We were online buddies and more like pen pals first, meeting a good few times before we got "together". With the Internet comes a lot of uncertainty. How can you be sure the person is telling the truth? I have always been wary of chatting or instant messaging people who are local out of worry they can find me!

Online dating has become very popular and more accepted in society. It is no longer so weird to say you met someone online. In fact, my sister met someone through online personals and now they are happily married. There are many success stories out there.

As for myself, I do not know if I'd do an Internet romance again. It can be exciting, but I think I'd rather do things the old fashioned way.

Scientists Study Online Dating

Tough Love

I'll say it up front: break-ups stink. At a busy intersection the traffic piles up, causing long queues. With each car coming to a complete stop it is a constant "stop and go". When two cars reach a stop at the same time the car on the right is supposed to go first. This doesn't always happen. The person can give a wave saying, "you go". Sometimes people cannot make up their minds, saying "no, you can go" while everyone else waits. Then there are the people who do not wait their turn and dart across.

Let's forget all this stop and go! What we need are roundabouts. What is a roundabout? It is a circular road at an intersection where the cars entering the circle yield to the oncoming cars and the traffic flows. Roundabouts come in different sizes and designs. The circle keeps traffic moving. Each "exit" point has clearly labeled signs (in Britain and Australia, anyway). If the driver is unsure which exit to take he can circle around as many times as it takes to figure it out.

Several roundabouts already have been introduced in the United States. Even CSU Stanislaus has a roundabout on the campus! However, it seems that many Americans just don't get it. (Think Clark Griswald stuck in the London roundabout in "National Lampoon's European Vacation"!) One roundabout in Woodland, CA has plastic posts put up around it to "guide" the car through. The roundabout in Woodbridge, CA has tire marks across the center circle because people just drive over it! This has officials concerned about roundabout safety in America.

Some Benefits
1. Roundabouts can decrease traffic speeds through the circular design of the road. (Most roundabouts are approached in second gear)
2. They are cheaper to operate than a traffic signal.
3. They are safer than traffic signals.
4. Minimized queuing at intersections (no more stop and go!)
5. Average 29% reduction in accidents, with a reduction from 9.3 to 5.9 accidents per year (from a sample of 11 sites; source: Roundabouts: An Informational Guide).

The roundabout is a new concept in the United States, but is a concept worth learning.

Starlight Express U.S. Tour

Yesterday I was able to see my favorite show, Starlight Express. It's an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical that many people don't know about. Based on "the little engine that could", the story is about racing trains. The entire show is performed on roller skates.

I first saw it in London at the Apollo Victoria theatre before the long run of 18 years ended. I was instantly hooked. Now the show is touring the U.S. When I heard it was coming to Sacramento March 11th-21st it was a must-see! Some new changes have been made to the show. The biggest being the absense of the race track. Instead of the characters racing live they have 3-D race sequences to watch on a giant screen. I prefer the track but filming the races is what allows the show to tour. A giant track is not portable enough for touring!

Changes were made to some of the original songs (to which I am still partial), but the show is still amazing. Just think about trying to skate, sing, and keep to the choreography. Not an easy task!

The Official Starlight Express Page

Why is California Gas So Expensive?, Kron4.com, March 11, 2004

Why are gas prices so high? Weren't prices around $1.55 a couple months ago? The days of $0.99 a gallon are far over. It seems that every time we go to the pump the price has creaped up a few cents. When compared to other countries, our prices are still cheap. Any island that pays import tax would be glad to pay $2.00 per gallon. Also, Britain normally pays an average of $4-5 per gallon. Once again, most of it is tax. The prices are accepted. They have no choice other than taking the bus!

When prices rise above the normal rate this affects business. Carefully calculated expenses instantly increase. This causes financial hardship, especially for those on a budget. Comanies such as flower delivery services may have to start charging more for the service to make ends meet. As a commuting student, I make eight trips from Lodi to Stockton each week. I am feeling the hole in my pocket. My money runs out quicker and I find myself at the pump frequently!

I admit I do not follow the political aspects of oil prices. People are starting to blame the oil companies. It is hard to tell how greedy they may be. The company may figure we get used to paying $2 a gallon so why not keep it there? It seems that gas prices will remain high. We are stuck and the oil companies know it.

"Top 10 Ways Travellers Can Be Jerks". bCentral.com, March 5, 2004.

Now here's an interesting topic relating to rudeness while traveling. For those of you who don't wish to read the article I'll supply a quick outline:

1. We can be space hogs
2. We abuse the use of our cell phones
3. We drive like maniacs
4. We don't know when to shut up
5. We are often short with employees
6. We take our kids where we shouldn't
7. We scream!
8. We lie
9. We make thoughtless comments
10. We request a lot more than we deserve

Like many of you, I found myself nodding my head while reading this article. Many of these don't just relate to travelers! Annoyances with cell phones and especially driving take place every day.

As a fairly seasoned traveller I have witnessed each of these at one point or another. However, I have also been subject to courteous gestures. For example, in Britain I have stuggled carrying my heavy bags up the stairs in train stations. Usually a man will come along and help carry my bags (without running off with them!). Also, if I am confused about something I do not hesitate to politely ask someone on the street for directions. They are usually happy to help. At least some people still can be polite.

My basic advice is to keep your mouth shut, be considerate of others, and be rational when things go wrong. I know it can be difficult for some, but it all comes down to manners! If you are polite to others there is a higher chance they will return the favor or be more willing to help. That is why it angers me when others do not make the effort. I guarantee that rudeness will be an ongoing theme in this blog.

Girl With a Pearl Earring, by Tracy Chevalier

I read this book over the weekend while on vacation. I have studied art history for 3 years now and I have always found Vermeer's paintings to be mysterious. This book brings one of them to life. In 17th century Holland, Griet, a young girl of 16 becomes a maid in Vermeer's household. The book follows her experiences and coming of age. Also, history and imagination are combined to create a story behind the painting. In the past couple months a movie based on the book has been released.

Of course, as soon as I finished the book I went to see the film. I found it to be enjoyable, but it could be potentially confusing if the viewer has not read the book. You get a lot more out of it because the book is written by a narrative of Griet's thoughts. When seeing it in live action it is more enjoyable to know what is going on inside her head as events unfold. Also, the ending to the film was a bit confusing. I saw it with my mom and grandma and I had to fill them in on the "real" ending and character development for them to fully understand what happened.

Overall, I enjoyed the film and the book even more. If you are at all interested in art or something different in Hollywood then I would recommend the book and film.

There has not been much activity in this blog for the past few days. Foxnews.com Feb. 10, 2004.

Chocolate is good for the heart? That is good news for me, a self-proclaimed chocoholic. Then again, it all gets confusing with foods. One study comes out and says a food item is good for us and prevents disease, then another study will say it is bad. This happens with many things, such as fish, wine, and even fruits and vegetables! This makes me skeptical about these studies, making me throw up my hands and say, "Everything we eat is bad...and good for us!" As obnivores, we get away with putting several types of items in our body which can classify as food. We are what we eat. As stated yesterday, for some of us a lot of it is junk.

I hear of these studies but none of them have truly affected my eating habits. I like chocolate, and I am going to continue eating it!

McDonald's Phasing out Supersize Fries, Drinks. Foxnews.com, March 2, 2004.

McDonald's is getting rid of their supersize fries and drinks. At first I felt indifferent about this because I have never ordered a supersize anything. On thie other hand, this is mainly happening because of the threats and lawsuits claiming that fast food makes people obese.

Who is to blame? Is it the company for offering foods high in fat, sodium, and cholesterol? Oh dear, the food tastes so good it is addictive while McDonald's hides the health risks! Or is it some consumers' lack of control and bad eating habits? I think it's the latter. It is common sense that fast food is not good for you.
Yes, McDonald's does spend a lot of money on their image and their appeal. They are good at it. But I think it is just America's habits in general. We are by far the fattest nation in the world. Other countries are blown away by our giant portions of food and the amount of "junk" and "convenience" foods available.
McDonald's in Europe offers no supersize and the standard size fries and drink offered with the meal are smaller than the standard size offered in the U.S. The supersize is not necessary. If you really nead more fries and soda you can buy another portion of small fries and drink as well.

Yes, supersize means "more for your money", but in this case it's only more fat, sodium, and cholesterol that your body doesn't need!

Check out McSpotlight for international investigations of McDonald's practices.

I have been thinking hard of a blog theme for the sake of my class.
